Therapies
Different therapies are available at Columcille and can be chosen as an additional activity to do while attending Columcille. No one is expected or required to take part.
Eurythmy
Eurythmy is a movement art which promotes harmony, well-being and creative expression. It can actively improve the mind-body connection and encourages more awareness of one’s body and movements.
In one-to-one sessions on Wednesday mornings, five service users are given the opportunity to engage with a range of Eurythmy movement sequences and exercises led by Saraphir Legind.
Depending on the needs of the person attending, different aspects can be addressed in the session, such as improving posture and alignment in space, sense of balance, coordination and dexterity, sense of rhythm, and calming anxiety and stress. Some exercises also bring an element of fun and have an enlivening quality.
Usually people take part in weekly sessions for at least 3 – 4 months before having a break, but many continue for longer to allow the benefits to have a lasting effect.
Saraphir Legind is a qualified eurythmist and has worked in the area of social support for many years. She has a QCF (SVQ) level 3 in Adult Health and Social Care and a Diploma in Coaching and Mentoring.
Rhythmical Massage
Our therapist currently comes to the Columcille once a week. Treatments are given in a warm room where the person is guided through the treatment session.
Warm towels are used to cover parts of the body, and only the area to be treated is left uncovered. Each session usually lasts from forty minutes to an hour and includes a rest period of between ten and twenty minutes, in which time the person is wrapped up so they are warm and comfortable. The rest time allows the effects of the massage to be fully integrated. The oils that have been applied will be absorbed, becoming effective within the body.
Rhythmical Massage Therapy uses a gentle calm rhythmical quality of touch, which works deeply into the body’s soft tissues. The movements are generally flowing, rounded and harmonious. The aim is to support and strengthen the body’s rhythmical respiratory processes and activities, which are the basis of good health.
Rhythmical Massage Therapy addresses a broader range of health problems than is usual for conventional massage, as it addresses the subtler energy systems at work in the body and can benefit individuals with both acute and chronic conditions of a physical or psychological nature such as Anxiety, Arthritic conditions, Asthma, Cardiovascular problems including High Blood Pressure, Depression, Digestive disorders, Immune support, Insomnia, Low back pain, Menstrual problems, Migraine and headaches, Muscular tension.
Christine Lynch is a qualified Rhythmical Massage Therapist and registered with Rhythmical Massage Therapy Association for UK and Ireland.
Music Therapy
Music therapy is hosted by a British Association of Music Therapy (BAMT) registered Music Therapist.
Anyone can self refer to the weekly group sessions in the main hall where those involved can explore their feelings through interactions with others through music, movement and gesture.
This service is supplemented by Music Therapy students on placement from the Queen Margaret University Masters course. Individual sessions are also available in smaller spaces providing a more focussed and private experience. See link below for information about Music Therapy.
